Press release 18 March 2023
Fabric of a Flawed Society is a skilfully-woven collection of songs, shot through with the energy of rock and the anger of activism. The album draws on the Foxes’ signature fusion of instruments, their powerful vocals, and their commitment to stomping tunes, gaining early praise:
"A brilliant debut album, full of power, passion and something to say. This is definitely a band to keep an eye on."
- Stuart Green, Folk Club Radio
With a line-up full of established musicians from across the UK’s music scene, it’s no surprise that this dynamic and experienced live band are making friends wherever they go, finding themselves described as ‘a collective of ideas, dreams and social conscience’.
Frontman Liam Vincent (guitar, vocals) founded the Foxes in 2019 after spending 20 years in punk and rock outfits, and heading up the UK’s busiest function band. He was joined by Rebecca Mileham (violin, vocals), a classical musician by background with a rapidly-expanding pedal board, and Gregg Cave (electric guitar), a folk-rock veteran and member of TRADarrr, who has been writing and performing all over Europe since the age of 18. Multi-instrumentalist Matt Berry (bass guitar, vocals) brings his skills and training in musical composition and production, and Paul Disley (drums) – ‘Diz’ – is a superstar drummer and former member of britpop band Thurman.
After gigging across the UK, Liam Vincent and The Odd Foxes began work on Fabric of a Flawed Society, aiming for songs that expressed both anger and hope in a fractured world. The album title emerged in the extremely hot summer of 2022 during a long discussion about social media, hangovers and broken-down cars. Also a chocolate scotch egg.
And the band doesn’t take things too seriously.
Liam explains: ‘We’re just as happy for people to dance to our songs because they like the tune as because they’re fired up by the political message.’
And to the question of ‘why the name Odd Foxes?’ he says: ‘I grew up in a small rural village where fox hunting was a regular thing. When I was old enough to understand it and started to question it, I was told that ‘they only ever kill the odd fox or two’. That stuck with me.’
Engineering and production for Fabric of a Flawed Society comes from Mark Stevens, who has worked with everyone from Marc Almond and Annie Lennox to Busted and Bananarama. Guest musicians on the album include PJ Wright (slide guitar) of TRADarrr and Little Johnny England (and who gave Liam his first guitar lessons), and Guy Fletcher (mandolin), a leading light of the folk scene.
The Foxes will launch their debut album at Roman Way Brewery Northampton, and at HMV Banbury, on the weekend of 5/6 May 2023. Current festival bookings include the New Forest Folk Festival in July 2023, and The Brasenose Fringe in August 2023.
